There are millions of gallons of beer sold every single month. Did you ever wonder what the bestselling beers of 2011 were? We were quite curious given that the competition between the beer makers is huge at the moment. Thousands of dollars are spent daily on advertising and it seems like every single person has a favorite beer brand. The biggest surprise in the top 5 was the fact that only two companies managed to share all 5 spots with various beers they sell: Anheuser-Busch and Millercoors Brewing. Anheuser-Busch managed to make the most sales in total.
These are the top grossing beers in 2011:
5. Natural Light
The biggest selling point of Natural Light is the fact that it has low calorie content. It appeared in 1977 and was a direct response by Anheuser-Busch to the popular Miller Lite which was launched in 1973. It has an alcohol by volume rating of 4.2% and a 12 ounce can contains just 95 calories. One of the contributors to its popularity is its price, A 30 pack costs approximately $12! Natural light was considered the second best light beer in 2001 based on a report released by Consumer Reports. Also, in 2008 the beer managed to get the Bronze Metal in World Beer Cup under the Light-lager American category. Total sales for Natural Light were $286 million.
4. Miller Lite
The first Millercoors Brewing entry in the top 5 bestselling beers of 2011 is Miller Lite, which was the first mainstream light beer to be released in 1973. In the World Beer Cup history, in the same category as mentioned before, Miller Lite won Gold 4 times and also won the silver medal in the Great American Beer Festival. In 2010 the beer managed to beat Miller Genuine Draft in the Great American Beer Festival. That achievement was unexpected but it launched the popularity of the beer even further. Miller lite had total sales of $453 million.
3. Coors Light
Coors Light first appeared in the market in 1978 and was a regional beer sold only in the Western United States. You surely know the trademark Gold Certified Label as it changes the color of the featured mountains to blue from white when the temperature is lower than 39 degrees Fahrenheit. Coors Light’s nickname the “Silver Bullet” is a result of the silver colored can. It used to be produced in a yellow can that when scraped off left a silver can that gave it the nickname. 2008 was a good year for the beer as it replaced Budweiser as the official NASCAR beer and the following year a special edition was launched to mark the 2010 Winter Olympics. Total sales for Coors Light was $491 million.
Budweiser is most likely the best known American beer around the world. Anheuser-Busch made every effort to make their can patriotic by including red, white and blue colors as well as an eagle. It has a very long tradition, being introduced on the market in 1876. It quickly grew in popularity and has always been among the most sold beers in the world. It is also currently available in over eighty beer markets from many countries, being produced by different breweries located in various countries. You can buy it in packaged or draught forms. Budweiser had total sales of $570 million.
1. Bud Light
Bud Light is currently the flagship light beer of the industry and consists of 110 calories per 12 ounces. The first name chosen for marketing reasons was Budweiser Light and that name was a huge part of the success since the premise was of drinking regular Budweiser but with lower caloric content. Bud Light was first introduced in 1982 and is the official beer sponsor of the NFL. Bud Light Premium also appeared in 2012 and we will have to wait and see how well it sells. It has more alcohol content than Bud Light at 6% but also more calories at 137 per 12 ounces. However, it is still 8 calories lower than the regular Budweiser beer that landed in number 2 in the top 5 bestselling beers of 2011. Total sales for Bud Light were $1.3 billion.
